Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has defended his political position, saying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has always been aware of the major steps he intends to take.
Wike made the statement while responding to comments surrounding his political activities and his decision to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
“There is nothing I have done that I have never told President Tinubu that this is what I intend to do. If they know what I know, they won’t come to say that,” Wike said.
His remarks come amid growing political debate over his relationship with the ruling All Progressives Congress and his continued role within the Peoples Democratic Party.
Wike has maintained that supporting Tinubu for a second term does not automatically make him an APC member. He has also said that politicians from different parties can work together through a broader political platform in support of the president.
In a statement reported on Tuesday, Wike clarified that his position is specifically focused on mobilising support for Tinubu’s presidential re-election, while the PDP remains free to field candidates for governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections.
The FCT minister's position has generated political debate because of the wider realignments taking place ahead of the 2027 general elections. Several politicians and political groups are already positioning themselves around competing presidential and state-level interests.
Wike has also rejected suggestions that his emerging political coalition is simply an arrangement with the APC. According to him, the platform brings together politicians from different parties who support Tinubu based on their assessment of his performance.
His comments are likely to add to the political discussions surrounding the PDP, APC and the various alliances developing ahead of the 2027 elections.
With political parties beginning to strengthen their structures and potential candidates positioning themselves, Wike’s continued support for Tinubu is expected to remain an important part of the political calculations ahead of the next presidential contest.
